The Reactor – Suicide Squad review

By: DRWHO42

Let’s hear it for the bad guys! After much anticipation, Suicide Squad is here and it certainly has made an entrance. For me I wanted to see this movie regardless of the critical reaction. In will be brief and spoiler-free in this review but overall I enjoyed this movie and while it was not a “WOW” movie it certainly a movie I enjoyed and can see myself seeing it again.

First, this is not a trailer movie. Too many times the market teams mess up the movie by revealing too much in the trailer and I will that that what you see in the trailers is nowhere close to what is in the movie so go ahead and watch away.

Second, casting and character development was on point. Will Smith, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, and the rest of the cast make great use of their screen time. The writers did the characters justice by showing us their backstory (origin) and this helped justify the motivations behind their actions. Jared Leto certainly left his make with the iconic Joker by taking a fresh & unique approach to portraying him. There is a decent balance of time for the primary characters so, in short, this is not a Harley Quinn movie. That balance is a good thing because it does not overshadow the rest of the cast.

Margot Robbie is brilliant as Harley Quinn and I certainly cannot wait to see where what happens next for her Harley Quinn. Viola Davis is very believable as Amanda Waller – no lie & watch your back because she was bada$$. I was initially concerned about Will Smith’s casting – hoping he did not fall flat with a one-dimensional character – I was proven wrong. His Deadshot was one of the highlights from this movie for me.

The villains the team must face is a bit of a shaky point for me but after reflecting on the movie as a whole I got over it because this is the first of what I hope is a solid film franchise. DC is a little behind on Marvel with regard to the hero universe but I think this is there time based on what they have accomplished with this movie and the cast. I do not think this movie would have been so good if it was made 10 years ago. Timing was just right and the DCU is shaping up to be a good one. My message to DC is – keep going.

There are a few Easter eggs in this movie so watch out for them on top of that there is a mid-credit scene that you should see.

My rating for this movie is a B – not a home run but I certainly enjoyed it. If you can see it in IMAX 3D there is a special countdown used before the film starts and it does play well on the large format screen.
