The Reactor: Queen of Katwe Review

By Boukenred

From the Disney Studios comes the inspiring story Queen of Katwe: a tale about how genius can be found in any part of the world. Based on the real-life story of Phiona Mutesi, this is a coming-of-age story about a young girl who was born in poverty in the nation of Uganda, but changed all that through her talent and skill at the game of chess.

The lead character, Phiona Mutesi, is played by Madina Nalwanga, making her film debut. Viewers will immediately fall in love with her performance throughout the movie. Nalwanga demonstrates Mutesi’s struggles and hardships during her life of poverty, allowing the audience to really empathize with Mutesi’s challenge to overcome any obstacles in her way. At the same time, we witness the spark and spirit given to her by the game of chess, which motivated her to become a professional chess player, and represent her nation.

The movie also benefits from ensemble cast, including David Oyelowo, and Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o. Both actors’ performances compliment the story through different perspectives of Nalwanga’s character, Phiona Mutesi. As Mutesi’s coach, David Oyelowo’s character  helps Phiona discover her talent and skill as a chess player, coaching her throughout the movie. Lupine Nyong’o plays Mutesi’s mom, driving the emotional narrative of the story through tough and heart-warming scenes.

Queen of Katwe proves to be a very beautiful retelling of the inspirational ideal to never give up, and always pursue your dreams, even if the odds are stack against you. The movie has an amazing ensemble cast, as well as the high production quality for which Disney is known.

In the end, this is a movie that can be enjoyed by anyone, and one audiences will appreciate both for its narrative story and the inspirational message this film has offer.
