Upcoming Week in TV 9/25: Debates, Pilot Ratings & LUKE CAGE

by Alyssa and DrWho42

Finally, Luke Cage hits Netflix on Friday morning! How many episodes will you binge?
That same morning, Amazon is dropping a show by Woody Allen titled Crisis In Six Scenes. We’ve also get two new shows from the SyFy Channel titled Aftermath and Channel Zero.  Drunk History, Once Upon a Time, Last Man on Earth, Regular Show, Bob’s Burgers, and the Simpsons return.

PSA: If you’re on the fence about voting or who to vote for please take a few min’s and tune into the Debate on Monday night. An informed decision is way better than a default choice. If you’ve already decided and are sick of the political show, there’s Monday Night Football and catching up on stacked up shows! I do still recommend dvr’ing the debate though, as there maybe a media sound bite or two that will be worth examining in full context.

Last week delivered a lot of new shows.  While I tend to be generous, there are some definite winners and losers. These grades are only for the pilot episodes- no guarantee on the rest of the season.

  • ABC Designated Survivor A  Like most disaster flix the first episode was great- if they can keep it up is the big question.
  • FOX Lethal Weapon B  Good chemistry between the leads plus they actually have the chops & can act.
  • NBC Good Place B  Cute & fluffy but original & well written.
  • FX Better Things B-  Quirky adult sit-com that had a laugh or two.
  • CBS Bull B-   Good performance by the lead, M. Weatherly but not so much for the plot & writing.
  • USA Falling Water B+ The show has potential to get confusing but they laid out the basic premise. Well acted.
  • CBS MacGyver D+ Formulaic and predictable. Cute lead actor but that’s not enough.
  • ABC Notorious B+ Interesting plot with good chemistry between the leads- It feels like there is enough to keep the show going for a while.
  • SYFY Van Helsing B Interesting twist to the vampire story with decent production values. It could be enough to carry it through a season or 2.
  • FOX The Exorcist A- Surprisingly well done and written, it has more of a movie quality then a TV show feel to the show.
  • FOX Pitch B+ Well written & acted, it’s worth continuing to watch. Is there enough there for a full season or 2?
  • NBC This is Us A very well done drama without geek overtones. The season isn’t laid out, I am interested in watching it unfold.

Based on an unnerving tale written by Kris Straub that gained notoriety online as a “creepypasta” (user-generated horror stories that are published and passed around the internet), Candle Cove centers on one man’s obsessive recollections of a mysterious children’s television program from the 1980s – and his ever-growing suspicions about the role it might have played in a series of nightmarish and deadly events from his childhood. From Universal Cable Productions, Channel Zero: Candle Cove is from showrunner and executive producer Nick Antosca (“Hannibal,” “Teen Wolf”), who wrote the CHANNEL ZERO pilot, and Max Landis (“Chronicle,” “American Ultra”).

Alyssa bought her first comic at age 7 & was hooked. She has collected comics most of her life. Recently she has branched out to comic art and books and the occasional Lego. She goes to as many con’s as she can & enjoys the ‘long form’ story telling of TV. She also enjoys new kinds of food- yes, she is a foodie.
