Week in TV: 12/29 Sherlock, Emerald City, & Winter Premieres

By Alyssa & DRWHO42

The new year brings with it a deluge of winter & season premieres.  This week brings us the highly anticipated return of Sherlock for it’s 4th season on New Years Day. In addition, there are also some old favorites returning this week including The Big Bang Theory, Blacklist, Grimm, & Sleepy Hollow. For Bones fans the series begins its final season Tuesday.

As for new shows we finally get to see NBC’s Emerald City Friday. The series is a reimagined Wizard of OZ and according to the series director, Tarsem Singh (The Cell and The Fall), it is a cross between Game of Thrones and the Wizard of OZ.  “It’s a grimmer take on the original. For instance, in NBC’s version the Scarecrow isn’t an absentminded farm tool but a mentally traumatized soldier who was crucified on the side of the yellow brick road.”

In a departure from the conventional TV shooting schedule, Tarsem was able to convince NBC to bypass the traditional pilot phase and instead produce and shoot the series in it’s entirety. The executive producer, Shaun Cassidy said “We really had to go do a big song-and-dance saying, ‘Trust us,’ ” Cassidy confirmed. “It’s going to be scary. We’re going to shoot everything out of sequence. The entire 10 hours are going to be [story]-boarded as one movie.”
For a more in depth look at the series, take a read of the LA time write up.  Here’s the Trailer

FOX     The Mick: Pilot (mic-101) [Series Premiere – Special Night & Time]

THE MICK is a no-holds-barred single-camera comedy that gives new meaning to the phrase “dysfunctional family.” MACKENZIE aka “MICKEY” (Kaitlin Olson, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) is a brash, two-bit hustler from Rhode Island who has spent her entire life shirking any semblance of responsibility. Lacking any drive, but in constant search of the next easy payday, Mickey is not without her charms. She’s smart, she’s fun, and despite all appearances, her head’s always in the game. She just needs a big win.

That win kinda, sorta comes true when, looking for a handout, Mickey visits her estranged sister and billionaire brother-in-law in Greenwich, CT, but gets more than she bargained for, as this absurdly rich couple flees the country to escape federal fraud charges. In a surprising turn of events, Mickey must assume guardianship of their three high-maintenance and ill-parented children: SABRINA (Sofia Black D’Elia, “The Messengers,” “Gossip Girl”), an ambitious, 18-going-on-30-year-old who is a worthy adversary to Mickey; CHIP (Thomas Barbusca, “The New Normal,” “Grey’s Anatomy”), 13, an arrogant, entitled neo-con-in-the-making with an extremely punchable face; and BEN (newcomer Jack Stanton), seven, an adorably fragile nerd.
