Riverdale’s Josie & the Pussycats to Perform Sugar Sugar

Fans of Archie comics already know that the series has been adapted for television in CW’s Riverdale, currently airing Thursday nights. While the tone of the show is a little darker than the traditional comic books, where some changes have been made to the characters and their background stories, Riverdale has done its best to keep a foot in tradition as well. As such, on the second episode of the series, Josie and the Pussycats will perform the song Candy Girl (Sugar Sugar) during a cheerleading exhibition at a Riverdale football game. Naturally, Betty, Veronica, and Cheryl will be participating as cheerleaders!

Candy Girl (Sugar Sugar) is a rap song released in 2009, sampling heavily from the original Sugar Sugar Billboard hit, released in 1969 by The Archies, as performed on their Saturday morning cartoon show.

I have to admit, as an Archie fan, I’m a little disappointed not to see Archie playing and singing the song, especially given that the show has already established his desire to be a musician and his ability to write songs. However it’s great to see the classic song included in this modern version of the Archie universe.

Josie and the Pussycats’ version of Candy Girl (Sugar Sugar) will be on your television on the night of Thursday, February 2, but you can see a sneak preview here.
