Week in TV: 2/5 SuperBowl, Legacy & Legion

By Alyssa & DRWHO42

We start with the epic battle for the NFL’s top prize in the Super Bowl. We are anticipating a shootout based on the performances of both teams this season. While most of us focus on the game there could be a few interesting commercials to lookout for, including the cast of Stranger Things.

After the game you may want to stick with FOX for the first of their two new entries we are highlighting this week. First up is 24: Legacy, which from the trailers we have seen and the early reviews could be worth tuning in for. This is the first series without our beloved Jack Bauer but we are hopeful the change will be a good one. The other new series debuting Monday is APB. The series centers on a billionaire who uses his fortune and technological resources to help fight crime in a Chicago police district. The premise is interesting however we are curious about the long-term with this particular offering. 24 airs both Sunday and Monday so we will get what is forecasted to be a one-two punch of adrenaline filled action over two nights.

The third new series is FX’s Legion. There is a lot of potential and incentive to watch this series as early reviews have been positive. With Aubrey Plaza and Jean Smart in the cast we certainly look forward to checking this out.

In the realm of returning series we will see the return of Reign on The CW for its last season. Lastly, we will say adieu to Code Black, which wraps up its second season this week.

Looking back at the premieres last week we have mixed feelings. Powerless is cute even however it tries too hard at times. Although Alan Tudyk is always fun and we may stick with it next week before weighing a final verdict. We’re passing on Superior Donuts because it is a bit cliche. Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet is original and spontaneous. We strongly recommend adding it to your Netflix lists. We also enjoyed CBS’s Training Day. Although it may be billed as a reboot the focus is not entirely focused on the Bill Paxton, it is an ensemble cast with good characters. The series deals with hard issues and is not the typical cop buddy show in comparison to another cop series, Lethal Weapon.

Returning series Black Sails and The 100 came back in a big way this past week and we look forward to continue watching this week.

We’re announcing the winter & spring season premieres every Sunday so stay tune to our weekly posts for more details. What shows are you looking forward in 2017? If there are any series that excites you please join the conversation on the FoCC forum and let us know by clicking here.

The clock ticks again with 24: LEGACY, the next evolution of the Emmy Award-winning “24.” From Emmy Award-winning executive producer Howard Gordon (“Homeland,” “24: Live Another Day”), Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning executive producer Brian Grazer (“A Beautiful Mind,” “24”), writers and executive producers Manny Coto and Evan Katz (“24,” “24: Live Another Day”), director and executive producer Stephen Hopkins (“24”) and executive producer and original series star Kiefer Sutherland, 24: LEGACY chronicles an adrenaline-fueled race against the clock to stop a devastating terrorist attack on United States soil – in the same real-time format that has propelled this genre-defining series. Six months ago in Yemen, an elite squad of U.S. Army Rangers, led by Sergeant ERIC CARTER (Corey Hawkins, “Straight Outta Compton”), killed terrorist leader Sheik Ibrahim Bin-Khalid. In the aftermath, Bin-Khalid’s followers declared a fatwah against Carter, his squad and their families, forcing them into federal witness protection. But a recent attempt on Carter’s own life makes it clear to him that his team is now exposed.

To thwart further attacks, Carter enlists REBECCA INGRAM (Miranda Otto, “Homeland”), who quarterbacked the raid that killed Bin-Khalid. She’s a brilliant and ambitious intelligence officer who has stepped down from her post as National Director of CTU to support her husband, SENATOR JOHN DONOVAN (Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Jimmy Smits, “NYPD Blue,” “The West Wing”), in his campaign for President of the United States. Decades of sleepless nights and missed anniversaries landed her at the top. With the White House within their grasp, can she truly embrace a new role as First Lady? Or will her love of the action draw her back in? Together, in this fast-paced thrill ride, Carter and Ingram uncover a sophisticated terrorist network that will force them to ask: “Who can we trust?” As they battle Bin-Khalid’s devotees, they are forced to confront their own identities, families and pasts. Sky-high crime, officer-involved shootings, cover-ups and corruption: the over-extended and under-funded Chicago Police Department is spiraling out of control. Enter billionaire engineer GIDEON REEVES (Emmy Award and Golden Globe nominee Justin Kirk, “Tyrant,” “Weeds”). After his best friend is murdered in a botched attempted robbery, and the killer remains at large, Gideon demands justice. Putting up millions of dollars of his own money, he makes an unprecedented deal to take charge of the troubled 13th District – and reboot it as a technically innovative police force: better, faster and smarter than anything seen before.  With Gideon himself having created the department’s cutting-edge technology, this eccentric yet brilliant outsider challenges the city’s police force to rethink everything about the way they fight crime.

But the near-overnight transition to becoming the city’s most advanced police district isn’t easy. Gideon knows if he’s going to change anything, he needs help, which he finds from DETECTIVE THERESA MURPHY (Natalie Martinez, “Kingdom,” “Under the Dome”), an ambitious, street-smart cop who is willing to give Gideon’s technological changes a chance.

With the help of Gideon’s gifted tech officer, ADA HAMILTON (Caitlin Stasey, “Reign”), he and Murphy embark on a mission to turn the 13th District – including a skeptical CAPT. NED CONRAD (Ernie Hudson, “Grace and Frankie,” “Ghostbusters”), and determined OFFICERS NICHOLAS BRANDT (Taylor Handley, “Vegas,” “Southland”) and TASHA GOSS (Tamberla Perry, “Boss”) – into a dedicated crime-fighting force of the 21st century. CBS Code Black: Fallen Angels [2nd Season Finale]
FX Legion: Chapter 1 [Series Premiere]

Legion, based on the Marvel Comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, is the story of David Haller (Dan Stevens) – a troubled young man who may be more than human.

Diagnosed as schizophrenic as a child, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. Now in his early 30s and institutionalized once again, David loses himself in the rhythm of the structured regimen of life in the hospital: breakfast, lunch, dinner, therapy, medications, sleep. David spends the rest of his time in companionable silence alongside his chatterbox friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza), a fellow patient whose life-long drug and alcohol addiction has done nothing to quell her boundless optimism that her luck is about to change. The pleasant numbness of David’s routine is completely upended with the arrival of a beautiful and troubled new patient named Syd (Rachel Keller). Inexplicably drawn to one another, David and Syd share a startling encounter, after which he must confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees are the result of him being a mutant.

A haunted man, David escapes from the hospital and seeks shelter with his sister Amy (Katie Aselton). But Amy’s concern for her brother is trumped by her desire to protect the picture perfect suburban life she’s built for herself. Eventually, Syd guides David to Melanie Bird (Jean Smart), a nurturing but demanding therapist with a sharp mind and unconventional methods. She and her team of specialists – Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris), Kerry (Amber Midthunder) and Cary (Bill Irwin) – open David’s eyes to an extraordinary new world of possibilities.
