Week in TV: 2/26 The Oscars, When We Rise, Taken, & Justice

By Alyssa & DRWHO42

This is a little light in the realm of new series and returning. The highlight for many will be The Oscars. The juggernaut of La La Land is predicted to take home a lot of hardware, however, with host Jimmy Kimmel we are anticipating a few surprises and hope for at least one gag with Matt Damon. If you are not familiar this is a 10+ year running joke between these two that is always fun to watch. Since Deadpool is not represented in the major categories as we would have hoped there is plenty on the plate for us to root for including Arrival, Hidden Figures, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Star Trek: Beyond, Doctor Strange, and Rouge One. As always our attention will be drawn to the visual effects, production design, makeup and hairstyling, and animation categories. We wish all the nominees the best of luck.

This week there are a few news series to take a look at including NBC’s Chicago Justice and Taken. Chicago Justice is another installment of the Chicago-based dramas on NBC. The cast includes Carl Weathers (Rocky, Colony) and Philip Winchester (Strike Back). Based on the trailer and the recent ‘Chicago’ crossover event this new series is worth checking out. Taken, based on the movie franchise, looks action-packed and is another series worth giving a try.

ABC’s When We Rise and PBS’s Africa’s Great Civilizations are both short-run series premiering this week and are unique options to check out.

Looking back at last week, NBC’s Timeless wrapped up season 1 well however it left us with a number of questions for our adventurous team. We are hoping it is picked up for a second season. Our reaction to The Blacklist: Redemption, starring Ryan Eggold (from The Blacklist), Edi Gathegi, and Famke Janssen, was lukewarm.  It felt a little bland and derivative, however, the quality of production is good and it’s watchable. While this is just the first episode of the series we will give it a chance to build momentum establish itself. Weather or not it’s good enough in this highly competitive TV market remains to be seen.

Lastly, we will say goodbye to Taboo and Emerald City as they wrap up their first seasons this week.

If there are any series that excites you please join the conversation on the FoCC forum and let us know by clicking here.
