Next Week in TV: 4/23 – Geniuses and a Handmaiden’s Tale

By Alyssa & DRWHO42

Last week was a great week in TV with the glorious return of Doctor Who. Reviews and feedback has been very positive and we welcome Bill (Pearl Mackie) to the TARDIS as the latest companion (or as they say in the UK assistant).

We look ahead to another fun week in TV. Hulu has been garnering a lot of positive buzz with the adaptation of Margret Atwood’s novel A Handmaiden’s Tale, which will debut this week. Please check out Transmute Jun’s review of the series by clicking here. Another entry to consider on Hulu is the highly anticipated documentary Batman & Bill, The Bill Finger Story debuting on May 6th. We feel that Hulu may pick up a number of new subscribers based on the quality and buzz surrounding the recent additions to their platform.

All of our favorite hero series on The CW and Fox return from their breaks this week for their spring runs including Gotham, Supergirl, The Flash, and Arrow. Silicon Valley returns this week.

This week we will see a few season finales. Starting Sunday with Feud: Bette and Joan followed up  with APB, Dimension 404,  and Comic Book Men. Bates Motel is closing for good this week after a great 5 season run.

While renewal news is trickling in  please be sure to check out our TV Renewal thread  on the FoCC forum (click here) for the latest updates. We are posting updates there as soon as we receive the news.

NGC Genius [Series Premiere]

From Executive Producers Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, the premiere season of National Geographic’s first scripted anthology series, GENIUS, will focus on Nobel Prize-winning physicist Albert Einstein. Based on Walter Isaacson’s critically acclaimed and best-selling book, Einstein: His Life and Universe, and adapted by writer Noah Pink, GENIUS follows the brilliant scientist through the ups and downs of his life, from failing to get his doctorate to developing the general theory of relativity.

The all-star cast includes Academy Award-winning actor Geoffrey Rush (“The Secret Life of Peter Sellers”) as the elder Einstein, British newcomer Johnny Flynn (“Lovesick”) as Einstein in his youth, and Emily Watson (“Theory of Everything”) as the enigmatic genius’s second wife—and first cousin—Elsa Einstein. The first episode is directed by Ron Howard, the legendary director’s first time directing scripted television. Through ten episodes, GENIUS charts how an imaginative, rebellious patent clerk, who couldn’t get a teaching job or a doctorate, unlocked the mysteries of the atom and the universe.  Click for more info  Click for trailer

Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values’. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

Alyssa

Alyssa bought her first comic at age 7 and was hooked. She has collected comics most of her life. Recently, she has branched out to comic art and books and the occasional Lego set. She goes to as many cons as she can and enjoys the 'long form' storytelling of the television medium. She is also a foodie and is always up for trying new and different food.
