Next Week in TV 4/30: Gods and Heroes

By Alyssa and DRWHO42

We look ahead to another exciting week with the debuts of American Gods on Starz and Hulu’s Batman & Bill Finger. The highly anticipated American Gods will certainly dominate the buzz in new television. The massive undertaking by the director Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) with the Starz network has produced a haunting, slow moving, gorgeous 10 episode series. Another entry to consider on Hulu is the highly anticipated documentary Batman & Bill, The Bill Finger debuting on May 6th. The History channel is debuting a documentary titled Superheroes Decoded which will also be on our radars. This documentary should have interesting interviews and will be a draw for many of us.

Looking back at the previous week Hulu’s The Handmaiden’s Tale has generated a lot of positive buzz and support from notable figures. It is a series certainly worth checking out.

Returning TV has The Last Kingdom (which previously aired on BBC America) and J. Michael Straczynski’s Sense 8 both for their second season on Netflix. Lastly, Fox’s Lucifer makes its Spring return this week.

This week we will see a few season finales including Taken, American Crime, The Mick, and Blue Bloods.

While renewal news is trickling in please be sure to check out our TV Renewal thread  on the FoCC forum (click here) for the latest updates. We are posting updates there as soon as we receive the news.

STARZ American Gods: The Bone Orchard [Series Premiere]

A lush fantasy about the seediest corners of American life, “American Gods” is a delight for fans of the book and newcomers alike. <snip>

“American Gods” is about Shadow (Ricky Whittle), but the show — based on the excellent novel by Neil Gaiman — is more broadly about that sense of unmoored reality, when the experience of the world you know shifts underneath you. “American Gods” follows Shadow as he takes an unexpected job offer from an enigmatic character and ends up a sidekick in a war for the ages: A battle between gods for dominion over America. Of course, neither he nor the audience has any idea that that’s what’s happening for the first several episodes, unless you have already read the novel. The result is a sprawling, beautiful show that is fascinating, brilliantly executed, and rather hard to follow.
