Next Week in TV 1/7: The Return of Discovery and the kickoff of Awards Season

By Mario Wario, DRWHO42, & Alyssa

So, you did it. You made it through the holidays (probably in debt) and now looking forward to what 2018 has to offer. And to those battling the cold weather, stay warm. Just don’t forget to use a Tauntaun to get through the heavy snow, but watch out for a Wampa as they tend to say ‘hello’ during the day. Not the adventurous type? Then try the lazy tactic with your television being the main weapon of choice, since this week will be dandy.

The highly anticipated new show this week is Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams will be premiering on Friday Jan. 12 on Amazon Prime. While it is an anthology in the vain of Black Mirror, the primary author’s sensibilities flow through. We are treated to humanistic visions of the future with a Philip K. Dick twist. The series has already aired in England to good reviews. The combination of stunning visuals and concepts from the writer of such movies as Blade Runner, Man in a High Castle, Total Recall, etc., all should give us a series to remember.

Star Trek: Discovery is back from its brief stop in space dock. This CBS All Access streaming weekly series will continue where the show left off, and present how every no-win situation can be won with a few simple tricks. After seeing how cold space can be, how about checking out After Trek. Think Talking Dead but instead of zombies, it’s Star Trek! As for the rest of Jan. 7, you have two NFL Wild Card games to watch on CBS and on Fox, The Simpsons and Ghosted coming back from their brief winter sleep, and the Golden Globe Awards doing its annual dance. Yep, the award season is finally here. But don’t forget to look at the main list down below to see what else is going to air for this date.

As for the next day, if you’re a fan of football and the SEC, how about checking out the College Football National Championship game on ESPN in the evening. In this major battle, you will have No. 4 Alabama facing No. 3 Georgia in Atlanta. It should be noted that Alabama will be going for its fifth national title since 2009. Of course, Georgia will be trying to stop that from happening.

Moving right along to January 9th, looking at Hulu, the ever popular Marvel’s Runaways will be treating its fan base with something they won’t like…the season finale! Meanwhile, another fan community will be getting ready to say goodbye to TNT’s Major Crimes for good.

As for the rest of the week: The Magicians will be ringing in season three on SYFI on Jan. 10, while the 23rd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards will be airing on The CW the next day. For Jan. 12 NBC’s Blindspot will be returning from its winter break. Concluding the week will be a couple of NFL Divisional games that will (hopefully) be good to watch.
