This is what I would like to know. NYCC does hotel booking this way, and GenCon does as well, with a waiting room. IMHO, it's the best solution. No lottery, but you actually get to pick directly from what's actually there. An immediate answer and no dark mystery of how people's selections were processed.

Think so as well, particularly since it doesn't matter how long it takes to fill out the form anymore. One thing I've been wondering though is if there was  manual element to the dupe-flagging, maybe a computer flagged requests and then a person eyeballed it.

In the SXSW example, they also had an optional form where you fill out 2 hotel choices and they contact you in two days. I didn't understand if that was just a disadvantage of faxing/mailing in your choices, subject to manual interpretation!

The advantage of OnPeak, you can still do room blocks with a live reservation system.  So you wouldn't need extra sessions taking room reservations away for folks to ponder their best choice over 72 hours. You'd have to make your choice within the live, alloted time.

Got tired of waiting for the waitlist so I was looking around on the Internet and found one of those mystery deals on Priceline for a downtown hotel during the con for $205 a night.  Turns out it's for the Renaissance Hotel (formerly the W).  9 blocks away from the convention center.  Honestly, I think this deal is hard to beat.

Grab it! I had a single at Hampton Inn Downtown for that exact rate. And it's probably 15 blocks away, maybe more. I'd be hyper ventilating trying to get it booked before it disappeared.

I grabbed a room and so did my friend.  Never did a blind deal through Priceline before.  Weird that the rates are cheaper for the hotel than the rate through the convention.  Happy I have a place to stay downtown!

I tried to do a bid the other day, but it didn't work out lol. Are you guys talking about 'Express Deals'? I can't find anything about 'Mystery Deals' on priceline.

Yes.  Express deals.  I couldn't remember the actual name.  You know it's a 4 star hotel and they give you an idea of the area it will be in but you don't know what the hotel is until you reserve it.  It's also non-refundable. I was nervous but luckily it looks like it will be ok.

That is phenomenal! It gets scary when you do that priceline thing.  I never had the cajones to do it.  Knowing my luck, I would get a tiny box for a room.

Marriott.com is offering rooms at the new Residence Inn You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login and Spring Hill Suites You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login from July 20-24 for !40,000 points or $499/night.   They're both located at N. Harbor and W. Broadway... so not terribly far, under 2 miles.  Google says it's 1.8 miles, a 15 minute walk (depends on how fast you walk, I suppose).

They are side by side.  Google map for reference!!!  You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

That Residence Inn looks nice! I hope it joins the hotel sale next year.  This is my last year trying to chase the big six.  That one looks perfect for a more relaxed con.  Can't wait to read the reviews of whoever grabs it this year!

FYI, the Hotel Indigo, which had been asking a ridiculous amount for their rooms on Expedia and other sites, is no longer listed.  Either they took them off the market or someone paid the price.

For reference I stayed at the Wyndham which is right there as well.  It's a hell of a lot further than a 15 minute walk.  1.8 miles is not 15 minutes, my work is 1.8 miles from my house and it's 30-40 minutes and I walk pretty briskly.  I'm also in good shape, so take that as you will.  It's a nice walk though.

I was mistaken... it says walking / tram is 15 mins.  You're right.

I think we stayed there too.  Was that a Holiday Inn at one time?  It's a good walk, but not too bad.  30 mins I think.
